[SailfishDevel] How to detect SailfishOS version in runtime?

Thanks for advice. I found a file /etc/sailfish-release and strings 
'ID=sailfishos' and 'VERSION_ID=1.1.1.26' in it.
Also i found a file /etc/os-release which actually is a symlink to 
/etc/sailfish-release. So, one more question:

What is better to rely on /etc/os-release or /etc/sailfish-release ?

Also on SailfishOS Emulator environment variables $ID and $VERSION_ID 
are set accordingly to 'sailfishos' and '1.1.1.26'.

Is it possible to rely on $ID and $VERSION_ID ?
