I see that you're running a 64bit OS (you downloaded a 64 bit
installer of the SDK). So am I and on my machine /usr/lib/virtualbox is
empty so have you by any chance installed the 32 bit version of
VirtualBox?

Nope. Both of the shared object files are installed here.
